Slower speeds on WiFi

wireless speeds are lower than when using a cable connection.

Wireless technology has change over the years and many laptops and devices that are 2 years old or older, may not support the faster wireless speeds.

Firstly you need to look at your wireless status on your device to find the wireless speed (Example 54Mb) once you found this, half the figure and subtract 2mb for interference. Also the further you are away from the router will also affect the wifi speed, so keep a eye on the speed of the wifi connection.

Wireless devices that are 802.11b 11Mb will only support speeds of 4.5mb
Wireless devices that are 802.11g 54Mb will only support speeds of 21.5mb
Wireless devices that are 802.11n 150Mb will only support speeds of 35.5mb
Wireless devices that are 802.11n 300Mb will only support speeds of 72.5mb

You also need to make sure that your router is a wireless 802.11 b/g/n router this will support upto 150Mb wireless signal or 300Mb. Wireless speeds may get lower depending on the distance from the router and interference in your home.

Your router may also not be set to the optimum speed, by login into the router you can check the settings, if you need help with this then please send us the make and model of your router and we will email back the instructions on how to check the wireless settings.

The figures are a rule of thumb and will vary from home to home. All routers supplied by I Need broadband are a minimum of wireless 802.11/b/g/n 150Mb.
